Acne
Acne is a common disorder of the skin that occurs when the gland next to hair follicles under the skin become clogged, and dead skin cells plug the pores leading to pimples or zits. This occurs most often on the face but can also appear on the back, chest and shoulders.
There are mainly two types of acne, comedogenic and non-comedogenic. Comedogenic acne is non-inflammatory and can be seen in the form of whiteheads and blackheads. Non-comedogenic acne is inflammatory and may appear red, pus-filled and can be painful. The treatment for acne can comprise of prescription ointments or cleansers, antibiotics and hormonal preparation to keep acne at bay. Life style changes such as a healthy/clean diet, better hydration and regular exercise can also help. Other treatments such as microdermabrasion and peels can also help mild acne. Early treatment can greatly help prevent acne scarring. Acne is most commonly found in teenagers but can affect people of all ages. |
Dermatitis (Eczema)
Dermatitis is a group of conditions, such as Eczema, that causes skin inflammation. These skin conditions cause the skin to becomes dry, itchy and easily irritated. In severe cases the skin may become swollen, weep and even blister.
It is most commonly found on the the hands, in the creases of the elbows, behind the knees, neck, around the eyes and on the feet and ankles. Dermatitis can occur without obvious causes, however environmental factors or allergens as well as food allergies like peanuts, cows milk, eggs, wheat, and certain materials worn close to the skin like wool and synthetic fabrics may cause/contribute to these conditions. Treatments can vary depending on the cause and symptoms. These may include prescription medication, creams and ointments to treat any infection or inflammation. Dermatitis can affect both children and adults. |
Pigmentation
Pigmentation is darkness or spots on the skin. Special cells in the skin make melanin and when the cells become unhealthy or damaged it affects melanin production resulting in pigmentation. Hormonal changes,certain medications, injury and genetics can all contribute to pigmentation.
There are a number of treatment options available. These may include face acids, retinoids, chemical peels, laser peels, light therapy (IPL), microdermabrasion, dermabrasion and lightening creams. RosaceaRosacea is a long term inflammatory skin condition that causes redness on the face.
The most common places affected are the nose, cheeks and forehead and symptoms can come and go. There is no cure for rosacea but treatments can keep it under control. Choice treatments will depend on the symptoms and usually include a combination of self care measures and medications. Laser treatments can help improve the look of enlarges blood vessels and also help long term redness of rosacea. MelasmaMelasma is a common skin disorder characterized by brown to grey-brown patches commonly affecting areas on the face, including the cheeks, upper lip, chin, forehead as well as the forearms.
It is more common in women than men, frequently affecting pregnant women. Melasma darkens and lightens over time often getting worse in the summer and better in the winter and may go away on its own over time. This skin disorder is caused in response to light, heat, ultraviolet radiation or by hormonal stimulation, genetic influences and certain anti-seizure medications. There is no one best treatment for Melasma, the doctor will design a treatment plan tailored to your needs. This may include medications, chemical peels, microneedling, laser and light treatments. PsoriasisPsoriasis is a long lasting skin disease where the immune system becomes overactive causing skin cells to multiple causing a rash with itchy, scaly patches of skin most commonly on the knees, elbows, trunk and scalp.
Treatments can help but this condition can't be cured. Treatments aim to remove scales and stop skin cells from growing so quickly. Topical ointments and light therapy can offer relief. |
